Oof, that poem! Thank you for for sharing these fascinating finds.

I get too distressed to watch any Jeanne d’Arc films. It was bad enough reading about her. And I think of her every time I see Greta Thunberg speak - or hear her talked about.

I love finding them and glad other do too! :) I know what you mean about Jeanne d'Arc, but this one is....also hard but in a way that feels so authentically stipped-to-the-bone and while it's hard, it's just an incredible film. And yes--Malalal, Greta--these young amazing women with conviction. I put Sinead O'Connor in that lot too. Young women saying the truth out loud. 💜

Yes to Malala, Sinead and all our unruly sisters who try to save us. I agree the film sounds amazing, which is part of why I won’t /can’t watch.

Fascinating to read about copyright and how it varies. Mickey Mouse is finally out of copyright in 2024!

A friend of mine does live cello accompaniments to silent movies. I'll send him Jeanne d'Arc.

A woman friend who owns our local taproom shared the same beer link today.

Thanks for the roundup!

I love public domain rabbit holes--crazy that Mickey Mouse is now soon pubic, I agree! I love that your friend does live cello accompaniments to silent films--I adore silent films, there's something about the limits that is able to reach into more emotion, but also surrealism, imagination. They feel more like the emotional punch of poems--even when comic, like Chaplin and Keaton. If your friend does one for Jeanne d'Arc, would love to see it! 💜

Here's a short clip of a performance of Buster Keaton's "Sherlock Jr." https://youtu.be/J3zsHoi1KqI

I was in the audience for this one. Another friend recorded the video of the performance. Another friend owns the movie theatre. It's a small island...

So, this is movie within a movie. In a performance in a movie theatre in a recording in a YouTube video in a link in a Substack Note in a browser in a window on a screen on a computer. Got that? Ain't technology grand!

Enjoy! Here's my cello friend's silent film page: https://www.cellobop.com/silentfilm.php
