Elizabeth Pennington (1732 - 1759) wrote poetry that primarily circulated via manuscript (i.e., the ‘proper’ way for many women to write and retain their reputation in society), but her poems were praised by writers like John Dunton in his poetic roll call of women writers, The Feminiad (1754), and her poems were widely anthologized in books that celebrated women writers, including Specimens of British Poetesses (1798) and Poems of Eminent Ladies (1780). Here is her Ode to a Thrush:
